Third Culture: Taste Menu

Culture through the lens of tradition, family, food, and nostalgia.

My senior thesis project explores the Chinese Canadian experience through the lens of identity, memory, and food. Growing up between two cultures, I found myself navigating the tension between the traditions I once pushed away and the roots I've since come to cherish. This project became a way to process that journey, and to pay tribute to others who have lived it too.

Food was the natural entry point. Within Chinese culture, it is one of the most powerful forces connecting family and community across generations. Through visual design, I worked to honour these rich, layered stories — translating personal experience and the voices of those around me into a body of work that sits at the intersection of culture, heritage, and identity. I define that intersection not as a fusion, but as a third culture.

About the Brand

Presented as part of Emily Carr University of Art + Design's graduating class exhibition, this thesis project represents the culmination of my Bachelor's Degree in Design with a major in Communication Design. Each year, graduating students present a body of work that reflects the depth and direction of their undergraduate studies. As part of the class of 2021, we marked a unique chapter in the school's history with the annual show moving entirely virtual, as students navigated the final stretch of their degree during the COVID-19 pandemic.
